Our Early Childhood Care and Education Centre

We are a privately owned, purpose built childcare centre in the heart of Island Bay that combines the feel of a home environment with space and resources to promote healthy development for all children. We provide fully trained ECE Qualified Teachers who are nurturing and loving, with a passion for children, a commitment to early childhood development and education and support for parents, family and whanau.

Te Whāriki is the Ministry of Education’s early childhood curriculum policy statement. Te Whāriki is a framework for providing tamariki/children’s early learning and development within a sociocultural context. It emphasises the learning partnership between kaiako/teachers, parents, and whānau/families. Kaiako/teachers weave an holistic curriculum in response to tamariki/children’s learning and development in the early childhood setting and the wider context of the child’s world.

At Island Bay Childcare, we aim to provide a learning environment that weaves the principles of Holistic Development, Empowerment, Family & Community and Relationships together with the strands of Well being, Belonging, Contribution, Communication and Exploration:

Children’s learning and development are fostered by building on what children bring to early childhood education including family/whanau, culture and language.

Adults can provide the encouragement, warmth and acceptance. Teachers can provide challenges for creative and complex learning and thinking, helping children to extend their ideas through sensitive informed, well judged intervention and support.

Children will have the opportunities to create and act on their own ideas, to develop knowledge and skills in areas that interest them and to make an increasing number of their own decisions.

Children’s learning and development will be integrated through tasks, activities and contexts that have meaning for the child such as care routines, mealtimes, exploration and play and maintaining warm relationships with other children and teachers.

Here at Island Bay Childcare, our commitment is to make a difference by preparing children for life, helping them to learn and grow as individuals, gain life skills they need to reach their full potential, and develop a love of learning.

We provide a learning environment that is stimulating, inspired by the children based on their strengths and interests, and articulated to meet their needs. Whilst our programme is based on the strengths and interest of the child, programme planning is linked to the goals and strands of Te Whariki, the Early Childhood Curriculum

We acknowledge the influence the family has on the learning of children, therefore welcome your continuous input to your child’s learning journey. We value ourselves, others and our natural environment. Whanaungatangata (mutual respect). We acknowledge our bi-cultural society and value the cultural diversity of children and families in our community, and this is reflected in our teaching practices.

Our teaching team is passionate, professional, innovative and enthusiastic, and share a love of children. This is reflected in our ability to make learning fun and a positive process enjoyable to all.

Partnerships are the cornerstone of our relationships with the children, family/whanau, extended family/whanau and the wider community. We strive to develop and maintain positive relationships with all families within our community through open communication. Our teachers recognise that children are individuals but also part of this wider community.
